The Diocesan Synod
The Diocesan Synod, whose members, clergy and laity (non-clergy), are appointed by the deaneries, is responsible for all the administrative and financial affairs of the diocese: these include paying and housing the clergy, Church of England schools, acting as planning authority for churches, supervision of churchyards, all aspects of training, the care of children and vulnerable adults, and, of course and most important, the mission of the Church. It puts into practice decisions of the Church of England General Synod and gathers from the deaneries and parishes the views of Church members to help the General Synod in reaching those decisions. Recent controversial areas of decision have been Women Bishops and Homosexuality. The Diocesan Office is headed by the Diocesan Secretary, Julian Hills, who is in effect the chief executive of a sprawling multi-million pound business
