HISTORY OF THE CHURCH

St Laurence Church is a beautiful, well maintained Grade 1 listed medieval church in Hawkhurst – supposedly the largest village in Kent, with a population of nearly 5,000. Although the church building, with its 8 bells, is situated outside the main part of the village, the Church endeavours to be at the heart of the community through the involvement of the congregation in much of village life. The refurbishment of All Saints Lodge in 2003 has resulted in very comfortable facilities for office use, meetings of many varieties, and worship for small groups, as well as providing a Christian presence and focus at the other end of the village.

STYLE OF WORSHIP

A diversity of worship is enjoyed at St Laurence, with Sunday services consisting of Holy Communion(BCP), Parish Communion (Common Worship), Family Communion (informal liturgy) and evening services led from time to time by the young people of the parish.

YOUTH AND CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

Children and young people are an important and intrinsic part of the life of St. Laurence's.  we have a wide range of activities for our children and young people led by a very committed and wise group of youth leaders.  We worship as a church family welcoming all ages at 10.00am every Sunday with a creche area for the very young.  On the first Sunday of the month, at the same 10.00am service, the young families play a big part in leading worship and the service uses an informal liturgy, with music better suited to the young and young families.

Alpha courses have been arranged specifically for the young, as well as preparation for their First Holy Communion and also for older ones their Confirmation.

The church runs a vibrant and growing youth Club at the Sports Pavilion on The Moor for fun, games and discussion, currently on Thursday evenings.  Babies, toddlers and pre-school children are welcomed with their parents to the weekly 'drop-in' on Monday mornings at All Saints' Lodge, opposite The Colonnade.

FELLOWSHIP, NURTURE GROUPS, HOUSE GROUPS

‘Fellowship’ is a key word at St Laurence. There are currently 6 house groups which meet regularly.

DETAILS OF OTHER CHURCH ACTIVITIES

There are a variety of activities in the church (e.g. bell-ringing, choir, orchestra, Mothers’ Union, flower arranging, meditation and prayer groups, coffee drop-in, parish lunches) which offer opportunities to grow together in faith. A series of courses, talks and learning opportunities are organised regularly throughout the year by the Vicar and the PCC.

SOCIAL/FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES

A programme of events including the St Laurence Festival gives the opportunity for outreach.  Each month there are charitable collections over and above our stewardship giving.

LINKS WITH SCHOOLS IN THE PARISH

Close links with the C of E Primary School have been established by the Vicar, and greater use of the church building is being made by the school. There are links with the two private schools in the Parish, Marlborough House School and St Ronan’s School.

AFFILIATIONS/LINKS TO OTHER ORGANISATIONS/CHURCHES

Most of the congregation are involved individually in some way in the variety of clubs, associations and workplaces in the village, which is all seen as part of the Christian mission. The Church’s particular pastoral care programme in the parish involves support of Bowles Lodge and Hillside (residential homes), the Cottage Hospital and Day Centre, as well as offering a team of bereavement visitors and ‘befrienders’.  Various activities are also organised in conjunction with the Hawkhurst Council of Churches.

OPENING TIMES OF THE CHURCH

The church is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm daily.
